Fine Jewellery Care Guide

Care needs vary by stone, setting, and metal. Use these principles as general guidance and follow any piece-specific instructions provided with your jewellery.

Wear jewellery thoughtfully

Remove fine jewellery before exercise, impact, heavy lifting, swimming, cleaning, or using chemicals. Apply perfume, lotion, hair products, and cosmetics before putting jewellery on. Avoid pulling chains or bracelets and do not force clasps.

Store pieces separately

Diamonds and hard gemstones can scratch metals and other stones. Store each piece in a separate soft pouch or divided box. Lay tennis necklaces and bracelets flat without sharp bends, and fasten delicate chains before storing them.

Clean gently

For many diamond and plain gold pieces, a brief soak in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap, followed by a very soft brush and careful rinse, may be suitable. Dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning unless a professional has confirmed it is appropriate for the specific stone and setting.

Take extra care with coloured stones and estate pieces

Emeralds, opals, pearls, treated stones, antique settings, and other materials can be sensitive to heat, chemicals, moisture, or vibration. If the material or treatment is uncertain, use only a dry soft cloth and request professional guidance before deeper cleaning.

Inspect settings and clasps

Look for movement, loose stones, worn prongs, stretched links, damaged posts, and clasps that no longer close securely. Stop wearing the piece if anything feels loose or catches unexpectedly. Periodic professional inspection is especially useful for frequently worn rings and flexible diamond settings.
